Do You Need to Wear a Mask After Getting Vaccinated? ... What You Need to Know

April 04, 2021 4 min read

Think you don’t need to wear a mask anymore?

Well, think again…

We’re advised to wear facemasks and maintain social distancing even after getting vaccinated. This advice, however, seems counterintuitive as the reason why we were told to take these precautions was to stop transmissions, something which should stop after getting the vaccine, right?

Whilst this statement is technically correct, it doesn’t necessarily work that way...

So what’s the point of getting the vaccine if I still have to wear a mask?

Here are some of the reasons why we may still have to wear masks in the short term, even if our individual risk is much lower, including what you can do to best protect yourself.

You can still spread the virus despite being immune to it

Getting the vaccine can result in boosting your immunity to the virus and reduce your chances of getting it again – correct, however, you could still carry the virus in your nose where it could proliferate and spread to other individuals and loved ones who may not have yet been vaccinated.

Transmission can be compounded especially when not wearing a mask or one that’s not effective in containing your germs such as the cloth or surgical masks which we often see the majority of the population wear.

You may still be at risk after vaccination

So, getting the vaccine does not mean you’d be 100% immune to the virus, it is just that it greatly reduces your risk with there even being some cases where individuals have tested positive again despite getting vaccinated, however, thankfully, this is a rare occurrence.

The main reason why you could still be at risk despite getting the vaccine would be because the vaccine is not instantly effective. It generally takes around a good few weeks for you to build up immunity to the virus whilst in some cases requiring individuals to get two doses depending on the vaccine they get in order for it to be truly effective. Most people will not reach the 95% effectiveness rate until two weeks after their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

Doing it for the collective good

We still have to think about others in society and prevent the virus from spreading for the collective good. It is, therefore, our personal responsibility to prevent the virus from spreading further and causing more unnecessary suffering.

It would generally take up to 80% of the population to get vaccinated in order to develop “herd immunity” and as of March 25, a total of 47,419,832 Americans had been fully vaccinated, or 14.3% of the country's population according to the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention tracker.[1]

This means that the majority of the population will not be vaccinated until at least the end of 2021, meaning we’ve still got some time to go before we can truly get back to normal, that is, if we still follow the precautions otherwise it could take a lot longer.

Ok, perfect, so I just need to start wearing my mask again and we’re all good?

Not exactly,we probably all have made the mistake of doing the bare minimum such as wearing cloth or surgical masks in the past in order to adhere to the new laws and to simply do our part when it comes to preventing the virus from spreading, however, this is simply not enough.

These masks are usually ill-fitting whilst not being ideal as they allow leakages to occur where you could go and affect others without even realizing it. This may be the reason.

So, what mask should you wear?

Why the FDA recommends wearing the KN95 mask over others...

Now, the reason why the FDA recommends KN95 mask over others is that it is simply the most effective when it comes to stopping the spread of infectious diseases.

With standard surgical masks, it is still recommended to stand at least 6 ft away in order to maintain social distancing and reduce any risk. This, however, would not be the case with the KN95 mask thanks to its 5-layer filtering technology which enables you to stand safely next to others irrespective of distance, ideal for when using public transport or shopping.

The reason why these masks are so effective is that first, they create a tight seal around your nose and mouth by pressing down on a metal strip, this helps prevent any leakages. Another reason why they’re so effective is that these masks offer better breathability when compared to surgical masks meaning better airflow and less condensation, which causes your mask to get wet and become useless.

You do, however, have to be careful when buying KN95 masks as the majority, in fact, 60% of the ones in distribution within the states are fake, meaning they don’t meet NIOSH requirements set out by the CDC.  It is therefore important that you only buy from a trusted vendor like eMaskHouston.

You can buy authentic KN95 masks that meet requirements set by CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for respirators through this exclusive link to get 40% OFF your order.
